For Susie, a mother from a small town without traffic lights, Angel Flight West has become a lifeline. Her daughter Evalyn was born with numerous medical challenges, including non-verbal autism, a cleft foot , and a condition that required a feeding tube, and she needs regular trips to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Recently, Evalyn was also diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which has added more complexity to her care. Despite these challenges, Evalyn is a bright and curious girl who loves learning. “She spells very well, is obsessed with colors, numbers, math, and writing,” says Susie. “She’s the most pure, innocent, and sweet person I’ve ever met.”
The five-hour drive from their home to Seattle is an added stressor for the family, especially with the added costs of gas and lodging. But thanks to AFW’s network of volunteer pilots, the family’s journey has been made easier. “I really can’t imagine what we would do without Angel Flight West,” Susie shares.
The one-hour flights have been nothing short of a blessing. “John Jewett was our very first pilot. He’s wonderful,” Susie recalls. John has flown the family on over a dozen trips, each time offering a professional and caring experience. “They’re real-life superheroes to me,” Susie adds. Evalyn, too, enjoys the flights. “She loves looking out the window and is always very sweet with the pilots, often holding their hands as they walk to the car.”
Beyond the convenience of the flights, Angel Flight West has allowed the family to stay in their beloved hometown, where they have deep family connections. “We thought about moving to be closer to Evalyn’s medical care, but with AFW, we can stay here,” Susie explains. The pilots’ kindness has left a lasting impression on Susie, so much so that she dreams of one day earning her own private pilot’s license to give back. “I’m forever grateful. They’ve really inspired me. Everyone is so nice and kind.”
Through the challenging times, Susie remains hopeful and deeply thankful for the people who make it possible for Evalyn to receive the care she needs. “Evalyn wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for Seattle Children’s and the people who get us there,” Susie reflects. For her, Angel Flight West is not just a service, but a lifeline to a better future for Evalyn and her family.
