My name is Jessica Theis, and I have been working at Angel Flight West (AFW) as the Communications and Marketing Intern during the Fall 2024 semester. With a background in communications and video production, particularly in social media and promotional video creation, I was eager to apply my skills to the nonprofit sector and expand my expertise in digital storytelling. This opportunity represented a meaningful way to contribute to a mission I deeply admire while growing as a professional.
I have had an absolutely wonderful experience at AFW! This role allowed me to strengthen my graphic design and writing skills, particularly through creating social media content, Mission Moments, and blogs. A highlight of my internship was interviewing passengers and volunteers to create impactful stories for AFW’s campaigns and newsletters. These stories not only showcased the transformative impact of AFW’s mission but also allowed me to refine my storytelling skills and connect with individuals whose lives were changed by AFW’s services.
This internship also expanded my knowledge of digital strategy, sharpened my analytical skills, and strengthened my ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. I gained valuable experience with tools like Canva, MailChimp, and WordPress while developing and analyzing digital reports to optimize engagement. Listening to the passengers’ stories deeply inspired me, affirming my belief in storytelling as a powerful tool for advocacy. Additionally, collaborating with different departments broadened my understanding of teamwork in the nonprofit world and underscored the importance of clear and consistent communication.
My time at AFW was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced my passion for using digital media to create meaningful social impact and provided me with valuable skills and experiences that I will carry into my future endeavors.
